Italy is the closest major EU market to Egypt by sea — four days from Alexandria to Genova, with frequent calls also at Gioia Tauro, La Spezia and Trieste. The corridor sustains some of the highest sailing frequencies in the Mediterranean and operates under the EU-Egypt Association Agreement, granting duty-free or preferential access on most lines via EUR.1 origin certification. Italian buyers source Egyptian fresh produce — citrus, table grapes, sweet onions, garlic, pomegranates and strawberries — for both the GDO retail networks and the broader food-service supply chain, with peak campaigns spanning winter for citrus (Nov-Mar) and late spring for table grapes and stone fruit. Cotton sits at the heart of the lane: Egyptian extra-long-staple lint and combed yarn supply Italian spinners and weavers concentrated in Lombardy, Piedmont and the Prato textile district, certified by the Cotton Egypt Association. Leather is a long-standing strength: hides and finished leather from Robbiki Tannery City feed the tanning clusters of Vicenza, Santa Croce sull'Arno and Solofra, supporting Italian luxury and footwear manufacturing. Olive oil and pickled olives from the Fayoum and Siwa basins enter Italy for blending or specialty bottling. Italian importers work primarily FOB Alexandria with documentary credit; certifications expected include BRCGS, IFS, GLOBALG.A.P. on produce, and full Leather Working Group traceability on hides.
